The blodoy thing is made of lattice-work see-through cast iron and I swear it looked as high as the sky tower as I sat on the grass on the island in river Seine eating camembert and baguette. How did they make an incredible piece of work like this all that time ago, eh?Even now, in the 21st century, the cathedral dominates the city like a huge spaceship ready to take off. I guess that was the effect the architects were aiming for; a direct line to heaven.We must have walked and walked and walked around the old city in ever increasing wonder at it all, until we collapsed in the market and were fed cafe creme in the classic gallic revival manoeuvre.You can get free historical walking maps from the tourist office in a dozen languages.
