I hear you on liinkg the separated, wide lanes. I, too, am a slow rider. Last weekend I was on Union between 3rd and 4th when I was passed by all sorts of cars and a guy on a racing bike. But, 45 seconds later we were all sitting at the same stop light so slow and steady really does win the race I feel safer riding on 5th than the other avenues in our neighborhood, but if you're traveling toward downtown, 3rd always seems super wide and not so crowded.
